Another neighbor pointed out that the tree had been tested twice for Dutch Elm disease, and that the test had come back positive both times. The disease is endemic throughout the city, and while it’s possible to treat, it’s extremely expensive and the treatment has to be repeated every couple of years.

We've had two Elm trees diagnosed off NE 24th in the last week and they will be cut down as well. Very sad, but this fungus seems inexorable.

I know this corner well. The curb and sidewalk at this location were raised very high, making passage difficult.

Elm trees also have a finite life span and sadly, many are reaching the end. I am glad to know a replanting will occur.

In talking with the BPOT workers and the tree's owner several weeks ago, this is the sad but accurate truth about this lovely tree. PBOT and the owner were both impressive and kind in taking the time to explain the circumstance to an old person walking her dog.
