I thought we elected a county DA who was going to crack down on crime. Instead, we get a CLONE of Mike Schmidt.

•••>>>> This is one of the big reasons why I sold my modest condo at W. Burnside and NW 16th after living there for 13 years, and am now enjoying the peace and quiet of a new condo near the river/downtown Milwaukie.

I don't think it's the DA: Nathan Vasquez happens to be very victim oriented. This has to do with the courts and judges. Judges are releasing these guys for whatever reason, but ultimately somebody decided there wasn't enough "equity" around and these ne'er do wells were determined to be the real "victims". And we can't incarcerate "victims" now, can we?

Maybe the mayor can tackle this one...

I find the handling of this case so disturbing. There's more: He broke the woman's nose with that punch.

Attacking a stranger for no reason is one of the most serious violations of public order and the safety of all. It's the opposite of two people engaging in a long feud that either could have stepped away from. Do we all need to brace ourselves from a punch by a random passerby?

I'm going to ask DA Nathan Vasquez what he thinks of this situation and what he's doing about it.

How does this make sense? There has to be some reason, rational or not, that they are releasing him right? I really dont understand.

I don't understand how or why they released him if he failed to show up for court after brutally attacking someone

We live in a State, County and City that are run by one political party, and many in the leadership of that party have abandoned public safety as an area of importance to their agenda. Witness the chronic under-funding and sometimes de-funding of our police and jails. They're more concerned with "equity" (as they define it), climate change, their pet projects and virtue signaling than actually tackling the most important glue that any society needs to function: Public Safety.

It's ironic that the party that pushes for gun control, allows neighborhoods and cities to become so unsafe, that local citizens have to buy guns and bear spray to protect themselves. If we want to have gun control, then there needs to be sufficient law enforcement that will make it so the populace doesn't need to defend themselves! But doing the basics like road maintenance and public safety aren't exciting, while the myriad of social reform projects (never with metrics that are measured for effectiveness one notices) captivates this leadership, and keeps their political donations coming in.

Is this one of the criminals that we will now be putting up every night in the Northrup shelter? I’m so glad he’ll be good and rested to assault people and destroy property during the day, like it’s his damn job.

Portland really is a lawless place...like the Wild West with no recourse for those breaking the law or attacking people!

You have got to be kidding. Is this a joke? Or is the joke the judge or his/her colleagues and attorneys for both sides who allowed this outrageous release to occur.

Just in the past 10 days that have been 2 other cases of drug-addled persons trying to physically assault women for no reason, completely unprovoked, within 2 blocks of the Metropolitan. It almost feels like the mere ANNOUNCEMENT of the proposed NW Northrup shelter has caused a serious uptick in drug-related assaults. Does not bode well for everyone in the Pearl, if this shelter goes forward. Note that the assaults are right on the outside edge of the "shelter impact area" so they will NOT get priority handling, per the Community Engagement Plan for the city's low-barrier overnight shelters.

And the city is going to keep neighborhoods safe around low barrier shelters.....
