I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude for living in a community where neighbors genuinely care for and support one another. Linda Witt is a shining example of that dedication, and I’m deeply grateful for her leadership, along with the incredible work of the PDNA Business Support Executive Committee, Bruce Studer, and the many volunteers who generously give their time and energy.
Because of their commitment, the Pearl continues its return to the beauty, vibrancy, and sense of community that make it such a magnificent place to live. Thank you to everyone who is helping make a difference—your efforts truly matter.
It’s a privilege to celebrate the people who help make a neighborhood feel like home.
As a new resident in Portland's alphabet district and reader of the NWE, I am appreciative of the spirit and commitment being demonstrated. This city has had a finer history and residents like these are leading the recovery. Truly politics is local. Perhaps one of these residents might win a council seat or even the mayorality.
Great work by Linda and Jim on getting this up and running, creating the training documents, and getting so many volunteers to participate. A big thanks to them all!
I sincerely appreciate everyone volunteering their time. Their commitment says something positive about this community. My concern isn’t with the volunteers—it’s with the fact that they seem necessary in the first place. A city’s first responsibility is providing a reasonable level of public safety. When citizens increasingly feel they must organize to do that work themselves, it’s fair to ask whether the city is meeting one of its most fundamental obligations.
It reminds me of New York City in the late 1970s and 1980s, when the Guardian Angels emerged because many residents believed the city was failing to provide adequate public safety. The volunteers did admirable work, but few would argue that citizen patrols should become a substitute for competent policing or city governance.
This is outstanding! Hurray for the Pearl Patrol. Now, we need to share this program to other downtown neighborhoods.

Would be cool to see a NWE article (perhaps monthly?) reporting out what the patrols are finding and experiencing on the Pearl streets.
Thanks to all these volunteers, this is so appreciated! Maybe someday we will have a city run by competent people again so that this isn’t necessary.
