If Mayor Wilson told the neighborhood it was a 2-3 year lease, and then without any public engagement the city approved a 12 year lease- and threw in a $42,000 property tax exemption to boot, he needs to have a town hall meeting and explain this discrepancy! Are any other city shelter leases for 12 years, or just in Northwest/Pearl area.

Gee, the Mayor lied his a-- off to the neighborhood.

Whoulda' thunk?

And Sturgeon the multimillionaire real estate heir Sturgeon won't timely pay the real estate taxes. nd her buddies in the Mayors office are going to work out a 12 year long re tax exemption for her going forward by applying for a "city leased" building exemption.

EAT THE RICH!

Finally, we have a Mayor who's actually been doing something about Portland's homeless problem (the tenting! the crime! the garbage! the needles! the feces! the bla-bla-bla!) and people are seriously annoyed. After all, Mayor Wilson should have been using the standard politician's dodge of expressing a deep, pious interest in listening to everybody's opinion first, a guarantee that nothing will ever be done. This passive approach of government "by the people" makes everybody happy (at least until the next election) so long as they have a chance to rant for awhile and repeat themselves ad nauseam at some interminable public meeting. Nobody's asked for my opinion and I'm outraged by this... but something definitely should be done about Portland's homeless problem -- just not in my neighborhood! How about sending them all across the river, or maybe just deport them?

Excuse me Gerhard, but after a brief reprieve the tents, RVs, garbage and needles are just as bad as ever, so yes people are seriously annoyed. Particular neighborhoods bear the brunt of this. Keith Wilson wasn't upfront with the neighborhood about the lease in the first place and then it turns out the lease length is quadruple to what he originally stated. This is a guy who says "Trust me, the homeless shelter impacts on neighborhoods will be responded to and mitigated". The City of Portland (and Multnomah County) are untrustworthy partners in facing and dealing with the "Homeless Crisis" that was officially declared in 2015. Eventually, people start to remember and learn what to expect from their leaders.

Please explain to me how an overnight only, low barrier shelter does anything to address the tents, garbage, feces (I’ll add in robbery, assaults, public drug usage and selling)? All it does is enable this and place it in the middle of a high density neighborhood - and signing a 12 year (!!) lease just underlines the fact that the city plans to perpetuate this homeless grift they’ve got going for at least another decade. So yeah, the neighborhood this moron mayor is basically sacrificing so this rich property owner can dodge taxes (what other money is changing hands in this?) and he can say he “did something” is justifiably pissed. Anyone who is aware that this guy just lies directly to his constituent’s faces and is fine with it, needs to reevaluate their expectations for the people they elect - hint: they aren’t high enough.

They need to send everyone sent from Spuncouver who's been shipping their homeless across the bridge telling them to get housing here. I've run into several. Native Portlanders spend year's homeless watching everyone NOT from here get PREFERENCIAL priority over native Portlanders homeless year's. Compared to new comers receiving housing in 18 months or less.

Keep them North of Burnside as it has always been. That is where soup kitchens and community service offices are located. What happened to our 20 million bond that was supposed to rehab the Skidmore fountain building. That was handed over to Mercy Core (welcome immigrants) that their now selling. Where did that 20 million for homeless services go? Allowing them to throw up tents blocking every access to grocery stores until they rob them out of business! I lived in Lents when Fred Meyer and Walmart closed due to theft and now their trying to rob Safeway on 10th out of existence! Prepare to have your neighborhood to be DESTROYED while they bald face lie telling you it's not shelter participants. Just like Our Just Future allowed little illeagal immigrant thief and bully Hilda to break into cars and rooms of the neighborhood and other homeless women participants stealing and assaulting others as the shelter employees made her excuses while abusing female participants namely me and a schizophrenic women. I have the pics and ignored grievances as my evidence no one will look at! Sell if you can before they open!

THEY, DID THIS TO US.

THE ENTIRE CITY IS SUFFERING BECAUSE OF THEIR ACTIONS.

THE FORMER MAYOR WAS OUT BURNING DOWN THE CITY, AND EVERYONE IS SUFFERING FROM IT, PAYING FOR IT ALL, STILL TODAY, YEARS LATER.

$7 MILLION SPENT ON HANDING OUT TENTS AND TARPS, TO GIVE ALL OF THE HOMELESS, WHEN ALL OF THIS, HAS BEEN ALLOWED, AND THE CITY TO BECOME COMPLETELY OVERBURDENED IN EVERY AREA. AND NOW, INCLUDING THE PRECIOUS SENIOR CITIZENS, ARE DYING IN THE STREETS TODAY !?!?

UNTIL THERE IS HOUSING AVAILABLE FOR ALL THOSE THAT THEY HAVE DONE THIS TO, BUILD THEM A "TENT CITY", AS CAMPING, A CAMPLAND, CAMPGROUND, ETC., TO LIVE, , NOT JUST A "DAY OF SHELTER", BUT A COMPLETE FUNCTION TENT CITY, TO HOUSE THEM UNTIL THEY HAVE A PLACE TO LIVE AGAIN.

WITH ALL OF THE RESOURCES, SCATTERED AROUND THE CITY, FOOD, MEDICAL, DENTAL, ETC., HAVE IT GO TO THEM, FEEDING THEM, ETC., ETC. IN ONE LOCATION.

USED COTS FROM BASES FOR BEDS, TARPS IN BETWEEN AND AS DOOR'S FOR SOME PRIVACY.

BRING IN POTABLE SHOWERS, AND PORT-A-POTTYS, SO THAT THEY ARE NOT URINATING AND ETC., ALL OVER THE CITY STREETS AND HOMEOWNERS PROPERTIES, BUSINESSES, ETC., MORE SO, NOT OUT, EVERYWHERE IN THE STREETS OF PORTLAND. 💔

WHY BRING THEM HERE WHEN THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO ROOM, NOWHERE TO LIVE???

"WELCOME TO PORTLAND, OREGON

HERE'S A TENT, GOOD LUCK!" ?

WHAT HOPE OR FUTURE DOES ONE HAVE HERE TODAY?

WHEN ALL WE ARE SEEING IS HOMELESS AND DYING PEOPLE'S ON DRUGS EVERYWHERE, AND EVERY AREA COMPLETELY OVERBURDENED IN PORTLAND TODAY???

WHAT WILL BECOME OF US, THE ELDERLY AND THE NEXT GENERATION ? AND THE SEEING OF THIS DAY IN AND DAY OUT?

$7 MILLION DOLLARS SPENT.

NOT INCLUDING ALL OF THE VARIOS PLACES, CHARITIES, AND THE DESTRUCTION, INCLUDING THAT OF THE BRAND NEW, NEWLY BUILT BUILDING'S BEING BUILT FOR HOUSING, BEING DESTROYED IN MONTH'S, THAT HAS BEEN TAKING PLACE, AND OTHERS HAVING TO FUND, PAY FOR IT ALL. ???

BUILD A "TENT CITY" TO LIVE, UNTIL HOUSING IS AVAILABLE.

NOT JUST "A DAY OF SHELTER" OR HAVING TO SEACH, TRAVEL ALL OVER THE CITY, JUST FOR A BIT OF ASSISTANCE.

IT IS TRULY, UTTERLY 💔 WHAT HAS HAPPENED HERE.

PULL THE RESOURCES AND ASSISTANCE TOGETHER, IN ONE LOCATION, AND ASSISTANCE UNTIL THEY HAVE A PLACE TO LIVE.

It’s worth examining what is making people mad - is it that we have an intractable problem that impacts residents’s lives on the daily (street camping) or an investment to move people off the streets so the “no camping ban” can be enforced (perminant homeless shelter). Whether it’s 2-3 or 12 years or a tax break for the building owner isn’t material - it’s the details of getting a to a solution. Gotcha-ing the Mayor isn’t the heart of the matter. Or is complaining about a property owner getting a tax break.

It seems that the neighbors are either not convinced in sheltering or simply don’t want one in their neighborhood. And if this is the case, what is the alternative?

Perhaps there's a third explanation here Rob. Perhaps the neighbors ARE for sheltering the homeless, but feel like they have been saddled with more than their fare share of the burden these shelters place on the communities where they are sited. Maybe the "lived experience" of these folks (and others who have shared their observations of living near congregate shelters throughout Portland), is that our local government (City and County) have been negligent in communicating with and responding to, legitimate concerns and complaints of neighbors both before and after these shelters come online. So maybe they simply want their Mayor and their 3 City Council Representatives to do their jobs by actually showing up and listening to the constituents who pay their salaries. Maybe they should come explain how this is the only option that will work and why no other options are available. What a novel idea, explain to those most affected by your actions what the situation is! But they seem unwilling.

And by the way: If the mayor isn't being an honest broker and telling the truth, then he should be Gotcha'd !

They had a tent encampment near the Greyhound bus depot. It's the fenced gravel lot. It was SHUT DOWN in less than a year as it was to dangerous for employees. They turn them lose on the people who have to pay against their will to support this trash. They make it so easy for them they have not 1 reason to get off drugs. If we started a tough love approach and life get hard for them instead of us they'll flee back were they came from which isn't this state! Get rid of the criminal drug addicts they invited with DO DRUGS ANYWHERE. Now there's thousands more here send them HOME and RETURN the city TO THE CITIZENS!
