Thanks Allan for getting this interview with Vasquez.
No other media outlet except NW Examiner seems to have followed up on this story with Vasquez, except you. In my earlier comment I compared Vasquez to Schmidt, but your interview shows that there are other extenuating circumstances that are out of Vasquez' control at this point. The County Commissioners should be ashamed of themselves. This is exactly why political conservatives are gloating over the lawlessness that is rampant in our city.
We need new county commissioners - Jessica Vega Peterson needs to be ousted, she has to be one of the worst elected officials ever here, and the bar for that was pretty high (or low?)
Allan is stepping up and doing the hard work to bring these stories to light, especially when our community needs it most. I encourage everyone who can to sign up for a paid subscription so that he can continue his journalism and potentially dedicate even more resources.
One would think that years of senseless criminal activity of all types in Portland, followed by a massive exodus of residents and businesses from the city — especially the downtown and adjacent areas — would have effected a sea change in governmental policies toward funding law enforcement and other measures designed to enhance public safety and livability. But this is Portland, where every day is Groundhog Day.
Thank you for standing for Portland and making elected officials, see the results of their failure to protect those who elected them.
I must confess that I anticipated the continual decline of the city that I at one time had such pride in and we moved to Clatsop County. Many will say they are glad to see people like us leave which is their right. Clatsop County seems to appreciate our lead gift to the new hospital and our service on numerous boards and charitable endeavors.
Thank you again Alan …Portland is blessed to have you.
Sad that generous folks like yourself feel the need to leave towards greener pastures but its understandable. Slowly in my circles with younger portlanders (20s and 30s) people are starting to see the need for real change. Lets hope Portland can be a place to be proud of again.
I voted for Vasquez because he had been working in the trenches in prosecutors office and I am happy he did the interview. The city needs to expand jail capacity so that is not a factor in whether to release or not. The case highlights the difficulty in deciding to release or hold someone based on the charge. I think judges should be empowered to use their independent judgement in how to proceed rather than predetermined options. Enforcing the law sometimes means jail time or prison.
I share your concern. Please allow me a few days to collect and summarize the information. I and DDA Garcia will be handling this case. One of us will get back to you.

I just paid for a subscription. He's doing good work!

So…I assume the criminal in question is still running around NW?
