Portland has a HUGE drug problem and these shelters are Wilsons way of sweeping it under the rug. We should all understand by this time that the lady sleeping by the shelter door is a drug addict. She is not looking for a job, she is not ready to move into a home, she is more than just a little down on her luck. She is a drug addict that probably commits crimes to support her addiction ….and this is the face of Portland and its getting worse…thanks for great journalism Allan
Carrie is correct. At the Town Hall meeting, the district police commander said they didn’t have the resources to go after the drug users. They were focusing on the sellers. Good luck to us.
And there is the problem, police don’t after drug users…drug users from everywhere know this ….they can use drugs, get a place to sleep, a free meal and no one will bother them. Come to Portland …the fact is the Mayor wont even let Carrie speak about it
I sorry Allan ..you’re right it is speculation. That being said It’s a pretty good guess. There is nothing compassionate about letting the drug addiction go unchecked and a shelter at night isn’t going to do much either. After years of this and over a billion dollars….I’m beginning to lose hope that this will change
NW / Pearl needs to make a comprehensive 'flyer' that residents can reference for reporting any and everything. I've tried my best to report as much as possible but frankly it gets confusing where to report what. There's the report a campsite website, report trash, call non-emergency, etc... Nothing gets done but we need to be reporting anything and everything.
Ive also noticed there is no place to report 'Drug addicts are blocking the sidewalk, harassing pedestrians, shooting up, and leaving trash and needles in their wake'.
It's not just NW / PEARL which needs such a handy " quick reference" handbill/ flier for reaching various city and county offices to report problems. Both a printed hard copy version and a PDF e version to load onto a cell phone and carry around with concerned citizens
And Candace, and Sameer, and Tiffany, and Angelita, and Jamie, and Steve Novick and the entire DSA cabal who have hijacked the City Council (Thank you Julia Meier).
And let's dump Megan and Jessica at the County while we're at it.
It's terrible when your home and neighborhood are repeatedly overrun by scofflaws of any kind, and your elected City and County officials are deaf, dumb and disingenuous to your plight. It's because of the sociopolitical inability of most of the political elites in Portlandia to admit the problem is unhindered drug use, and to acknowledge that their diehard libertarian philosophy of letting drug addicts and the mentally ill "have their freedom" to live their lives unfettered by the rules that keep society functioning, is making the rest of us miserable. The addicts and the mentally ill have their right to live as they want but we are expected to not only not complain about it, but to PAY for their choices, and then pay and pay and pay some more. And these political elites will not allow messaging that conflicts with their agenda, which explains exactly why Keith Wilson did not want a neighbor of one of his shelters to speak to his audience.
Message to Keith Wilson, Jessica Vega Pederson, the Homeless Industrial Complex and the DSA running the City Council. Making your law-abiding, taxpaying citizens live in persistently stressful, unsafe, unsanitary, potentially violent circumstances with no end in sight and not even a smidgen of humility to acknowledge their distress is a recipe for an EXODUS of those productive citizens out of Multnomah County. Those who can afford to leave will (and it's already started despite what Mitch Greene claims). When living here becomes not worth the day to day trouble, people with jobs, retirees with adequate pensions, families who's kids are out of school, will leave.
On Tuesday August 13th at the City Council meeting on Homelessness & Housing, Wilson stated "I'm not a law and order guy." Welp, there's our answer that nothing will be done and our NW/Pearl communities will continue to struggle.
Wilson doesn't have the resources now, nor will he have the resources when the shelters move in.
I’m sorry, but why should Keith Wilson get to decide who gets to speak at a public forum? They should have kept her on the invite.

Nothing is being done to address drug use period ( right outside the shelter). Even when it's reported to shelter services and Salvation Army.

We do not know the woman's situation or history. She did not appear to be taking care of herself. Beyond that, it's speculation.

I just walked by a guy peeing on the corner of 14th and pettygrove. Where do I report that????
Henderson for Portland City Council!
Dump Mitch Green.

Well, Henderson lives in District 4, and Green is the worst of the District 4 City Councilors, and is up for election in the first cycle./
Lets get the low hanging fruit first.
