Excellent statement, Norm. Seems you have shown there is some common sense left. Good work.

It’s really only one-sided violence at the moment, but I appreciate the article. Local media is terrible when it comes to these things.

Don’t see how the assertion that the violence is one-sided holds up unless the moment is a prettty limited one.

Thank you for a well-written piece that thoughtfully states what most people in the middle are in agreement with!

If they are saying "their American dream" then we must ask, "what is their American dream?" I say this because, if they want to do crime as they did in their own country in order to have "the American dream" we can not allow it. If they don't want to earn everything legally then they shouldn't be able to be here. Especially if they didn't come in through the legal process that we have has for years of not decades now. The problem we have today is the news is no news. They don't give facts they just give their opinion on a topic and that's it. We need facts in order to be able to make out own "opinion" on said topic.

I like you would like to see a return to some sort of traditional culture where the expectation is that people live personally responsible lives, understand that their passions at times affect other areas of life that affect others adversely and compromise appropriately. Finding one's bliss seems like an excuse to pursue it to the end without regard to the social consequences of it. Injecting drugs may be just such an endeavor but that doesn't mean that the medical profession should endorse passing out thousands of needles daily, normalizing a very destructive lifetyle, not only for those who pursue it, but for the city which is left holding the bag. We need prosecutors that punish those who break the law, police that apprehend those that break public laws, a medical profession that takes care of individual people. The public emergency that is Portland now will be solved when we get the fundamentals right, strengthening traditional law enforcement, prosecution, and focusing on rehabilitation in mental health. We need to set our expectations high and convey a firm belief in the individual to mend their ways and be contributors rather than takers.
