The problem: misinformed young ideologues spawn, once again, a DSA movement that reinterprets history so as to comport with their Tic Toc or Reddit screech. They don't vote because they can't submit a ballot on their phone, and buying a stamp is as foreign to them as actually reading a book, so better to just proclaim yourself a political "influencer" and condemn everything and everyone who doesn't agree. How did this Darion Jones and his ilk ever come to have the power to overrule the will of the people of Portland and advocate for literally cutting the great emancipator and the savior of the union down to size for his crimes against 21st century woke sensibilities?
Someone needs to write the full history of the wrongful detention of the Lincoln statue, including why it took so long to restore it to its rightful, historic place, who were the prime movers were behind the radical historical revisionism and how it was they almost succeeded.
Next, liberate the statues of Teddy Roosevelt, Harvey Scott and other deserving individuals who were smeared during peak woke and its ongoing hangover in this city.
We don’t normally associate the “administrative state” with local government, but this seems like a good example of the tension between unelected administrators and elected officials. City staff developed and advanced a plan that went further than the mayor was ultimately willing to support, and the public process left many people feeling that the major decisions had already been made.
The Sept. 8 forum reinforced that concern. The choice of panelists was strikingly one-sided toward contemporary activism and reinterpretation of monuments, with little visible representation of the preservationist view that Lincoln should simply be restored to his historic pedestal. For an event advertised as a public conversation, it felt very much like a “checking the box” event: the preferred direction had already been established, and public engagement came afterward.
I may be overstating the Oregon Historical Society’s role, since the event was organized by the city and not by OHS itself. Still, I was disappointed to see a senior OHS official become so closely associated with such a politically charged and one-sided forum. OHS relies in part on voter-approved public support, so appearances matter. Even when an institution has not formally taken a position, close association with a partisan-looking process can affect public perceptions of its neutrality. I would prefer to see OHS provide historical expertise and context while maintaining some distance from contested city political decisions.
I’m glad the mayor stepped in with common sense, but I’ll think more carefully the next time the OHS tax levy is on the ballot.
