So sad, such a wonderful and unique Building that may have been designed by Ellis Lawrence, first dean of the U of O School of Architecture and Allied Arts. My understanding is that the caged-in area in the "basement" of the building is where they put the bears at the end of the day.
Located in the area oft he original City Park,1871, Portland Parks had neglected the structure for several decades. The "Bear House "was structurally and historically assessed as part of the 2018 Washington Park Master Plan however, the Parks Bureau took no preventative measures to protector plan for preserve the Bear House.
