I was disappointed to see the "ChatGPT illustration" on your op-ed this month. What I love about the Examiner is that it is hyper-local. You stay laser-focused on NW Portland. I would love to see you hire a local NW Portland artist to draw a cartoon to accompany your op-ed. (I do note that I have seen human-drawn cartoons in your paper in the past.)
AI has been trained to draw using human-made illustrations *without gaining permission from or compensating the artists.* I urge you to compensate the artists by hiring them to make drawings for your paper.
Sometimes circumstances change. The artist responsible for past illustrations is no longer available. In the meantime, newspaper owners will need to find a way to "plug the gap" for a few months, until a similar source becomes available. I've been designing publications for over 30 years now, and it's just part of the territory!
